John chapter 6 verses 66 through 69.

After this many of the disciples turn back and no longer walked with him.

So Jesus said to the 12, do you want to go away as well?

Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go?

You have the words of eternal life,

and we have believed and have come to know

that you are the holy one of God.

Whoa, what a line in the sand moment when all of these people who have been following Jesus

like crowds of people. He's fed over 5,000 of them with just a little

bit of food. Like they're amazed by him. They're following him wherever he goes, but then

he teaches them, these crowds, what it means to follow him,

how it means laying down their lives and living in a totally different way than they expected.

And many of his disciples, verse 66 says,

turned back and no longer walked with him.

Like they were not going to follow Jesus according to Jesus.

They wanted to follow Jesus according to their ideas about Jesus,

but not according to who Jesus is.

Like is that possible?

Is it possible to follow a Jesus of our own making

instead of who Jesus really is. I think it's absolutely possible. I think it happens all the time. I think it's possible for any one of us to kind of create in our minds

who we want Jesus to be. I have written before how we, if we're not careful, we'll create a nice, comfortable, middle-class, American Jesus who looks like us, thinks like us, doesn't mind.
