Hey folks, Scott Weingar here, and this is not the MCRIT podcast.

This is actually the introduction to a brand new podcast that will be part of MCRIT.

And it's called one-to-one nursing.

One-to-one, as in this patient is sick enough, he or she needs a one-to-one nursing assignment. It's going to be a podcast on resuscitation nursing

for emergency medicine and for critical care. And I can't do this alone. I mean, really, what do I

know about nursing except from the doctor's side? So I need a nurse. And the nurse you're going to

meet in just a minute

or two is named Candace King. And she is the clinical nurse specialist for a hospital. We'll call

the Janice General, just to keep us safe on this podcast. And she is also a doctor of nursing practice,

meaning she's an NP with a doctorate, she has all the academic

kudos you'd imagine. And what her job has been for the past, I don't know, six or seven years,

is training the best cadre of resuscitation nurses that I've ever come across. And they're the

nurses that staff the ED Critical Care Unit at Janice General.

And Candice spends a lot of time thinking about how to make resus nurses better and then

eventually excellent. Now, why are we doing a podcast on this topic? Well, what COVID made me realize as we had a defection of the top

level resus nurses to various other positions like travelers and et cetera is something I

already knew, which is in order to do resus at the highest level, you need really excellent nursing.

And what happened with COVID is that a lot of the experienced nurses disappeared. And then we got a lot of bright-eyed, wonderful nurses who

genuinely want to be excellent at resuscitation. But in many places, they were not given the

training or time to develop

that excellence.

They were just thrown into the water.
