This expression is perfect right now.

The expression is dip your toe in the water. And we can say something like dip your toe in the water.

And we can say something like dip your toe in first.

You need to dip your toe in.

Okay.

So dip, D-I-P, your Y-O-U-R-T-O-E on your foot, right?

You got your thumb on your hand and your toe on your foot, the big toe, right?

Dip your toe, D-I-P, dip your toe in the water, W-A-T-E-R.

So to dip your toe in the water means put your toe in the water. And we use this expression

when we go swimming, especially in a swimming pool, but at the ocean, in a lake, in the river,

it's possible too. And the idea is, before you actually jump into the water, you want to know, is the water

really cold or is the water really nice?
