the very beginning of it all, I realized that they had a point that in the real world, in places where they aren't in the middle of the ocean, very few nutrients.

They're four and a half kilometers down from, you know, away from the bottom of the ocean, thousands of kilometers away from the shore,

And yet the photosynthetic organisms were working at nearly the theoretical maximum of photosynthesis.

And so I was thinking here I had been in the lab trying to improve on photosynthesis all this time,

So there was something about the natural environment that was much more effective.
