| 0:12.0 | I'm sure you've heard a lot about how bad refined sugar is for your health, |
| 0:16.5 | enough to think twice before putting that bag of white sugar into your grocery cart. |
| 0:20.0 | And right next to the white sugar are some options that seem that they might be just a bit healthier. |
| 0:25.0 | There's evaporated cane juice, for example. |
| 0:27.0 | Or what about raw sugar? |
| 0:29.0 | Are these so-called natural sugars really better for you than refined white sugar? |
| 0:33.0 | Or at the very least, are they a little less bad for you? |
| 0:36.0 | Well, first, let me give you a quick rundown on who's who in the sugar aisle. |
| 0:40.0 | Now, for the purposes of this episode, I'm not going to include natural sweeteners like honey and maple syrup |
| 0:45.3 | I'm focusing on sweeteners produced from sugar cane or in some cases sugar beets and these include |
| 0:51.3 | Refined white sugar. |
| 0:52.8 | This is pure sucrose. |
| 0:54.5 | It can be produced from either sugar cane or sugar beets, |
| 0:57.5 | but by the time it's been refined to a white crystal, |
| 1:00.1 | the two are chemically identical. |
| 1:02.0 | Molasses is what's left over from the sugar refining |
| 1:05.5 | process. It's everything that gets taken out when you refine sugar cane into white sugar. |
| 1:10.7 | Brown sugar is basically refined white sugar with a bit of molasses added back into it. |
| 1:16.6 | In fact, if you ever run out of brown sugar, you can make your own by adding one tablespoon |
| 1:20.4 | of molasses to one cup of white sugar. For dark brown sugar, add two |
