Good morning, and welcome to Kid News! I'm Tori. It's Thursday, September 23rd, 2021, the first full day of fall.

And we begin with more classic kid stories coming to the small screen. Netflix has just bought the Roll-Doll story company,

so it now officially owns every book by the famous author who wrote such time-honored tales as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda.

Netflix had purchased about a dozen of Dolls' works a few years ago, but this new deal gives the streaming service the rights to all 21 of his kids' books.

The company issued a statement saying their goal is to bring these timeless tales to more audiences in new formats while maintaining their unique spirit and universal themes of surprise and kindness.

There are some important elections happening around the world. In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was just re-elected to a third term.

Trudeau surprised a lot of people last month when he called for a snap election two years earlier than expected. In Russia, Vladimir Putin's party won a large majority in the Duma, which is the lower house of their parliament.

However, there have been complaints about the election's fairness because many of the party's strongest opponents were kept from running.

And this Sunday, German voters will choose a leader as longtime chancellor Angela Merkel steps down.

The chemist-turned-politician has held that post since 2005. The race to take her place is tight, and it may be days or even weeks before the outcome is known.

A big green change is coming to McDonald's. The fast food giant just announced it will drastically cut the use of plastic in the more than 1 billion happy meals it sells globally each year.

The change involves swapping out a plastic figurine of Batman, for example, and instead offer a Batman made with a dozen cardboard pieces that kids can put together themselves.

And the US happy meals already contain some sustainable items like books and Pokemon cards. A McDonald's executive said the additional toys will start hitting the US outlets in January.

In other kid news notes, a few stories about animals. First, the numbers of some rare species of rhinoceros are increasing dramatically, thanks to an organization called the International Rhino Foundation, which has worked hard to cut down on the hunting of these animals, especially in India.

The IRF says the biggest success involves the greater one-horned rhino. Their numbers have grown from a mere 100 back in the early 1900s to well over 3700 worldwide today.

You've probably seen a lot of butterflies this past summer, but have you ever heard the sound they make?

Phil Torres of the YouTube channel, The Jungle Diaries, recently recorded the sounds of millions of endangered monarch butterflies in the Mexican rainforest as they flap their bright orange and black wings, and it describes the resulting sound as just like a waterfall.

And an endangered turtle that washed up on the coast of Ireland has been returned to its native Canary Islands. The three-year-old turtle known as Julius Caesar was suffering from hypothermia since he's used to much warmer waters, but he recovered, and on the flight home sat in a crate on a passenger plane in coach, and even had his own boarding pass.
