One of 11 surviving first edition printed copies of the US Constitution will soon be on the auction block with experts estimating it could fetch up to $20 million.

This original document, the only one still in private hands, was produced for delegates of the 1787 Constitutional Convention and Continental Congress in Philadelphia, where the framers and founding fathers debated how America would be governed.

Sotheby's auction house in New York is managing the sale for a collector whose family purchased the rare relic back in 1988 for $165,000.

Since then, the document has been made available for public viewing at the New York Historical Society and at the US Supreme Court.

The seller plans to use the proceeds to fund a foundation committed to furthering the understanding of our democracy and how the acts of all citizens can make a difference.
