The difference between then and now is that immigrants from our childhood came here to be Americans.

And immigrants today come here to live in America.

The distinction was immigrants of our youth lost their ability to speak the language of their homeland.

And immigrants now don't need to speak the language, don't need to speak the language of their homeland.

Wait a minute, that sentence doesn't make sense.

This first part of the sentence is fantastic.

Immigrants from our childhood came here to be Americans.

And immigrants today come here to live in America.

I think that's a tremendous distinction.

The distinction was immigrants of our youth lost their ability to speak the language of their homeland

because they wanted to learn English.
