A day that is supposed to be the peak of hurricane season. But instead of teeing up a storm,

September 10th in the Atlantic is giving ghost town vibes. Weather traders Ryan Maui tells USA

today that the reason is the unusually dry and dusty air

that's parked itself between Africa and the Caribbean, hindering hurricane formation.

Researchers at Colorado State still believe the end of the month could be busy,

but Andrew Hazleton, an associate scientist at the University of Miami, isn't so sure.

He said on X, the lack of activity is pretty telling and that this year will likely end up on the lower end of preseason

forecasts. Thousands of miles away in the Pacific, Kiko has been downgraded to a tropical storm,

but is still strong enough to create dangerous currents and towering waves

up to 15 feet in Hawaii through today.

There's a new report card out for U.S. students, and the news is not good. For high school

seniors, scores in both math and reading fell three points since 2019, while eighth graders dropped

four points in science during the same time period. Both results were the lowest in decades.

According to Matthew Soldner, the acting commissioner at the National Center for Education Statistics,

the problem predates COVID shutdowns and reflects declines

that began long before the pandemic. He told reporters, my predecessor warned of this trend and her

predecessor warned of this trend as well. And now I'm warning you of this trend. We can't not pay

attention.
