we begin with the dawn of a new royal day in Great Britain. The country woke up this morning

to the reign of King Charles III, following the passing of his mom, Queen Elizabeth II,

at the age of 96. England's popular and longest-serving monarch died yesterday at her castle

in Balmoral, Scotland, following an historic 70 years on the throne as head of the British

Royal Family. Soon after the news broke, the Union Jack Flag was lowered and crowds gathered

outside of Buckingham Palace, laying flowers, paying their respects and staying late into

the night. But as strong as the grief is among Brits, the country was ready. Committees

have been meeting three times a year for decades to prepare for what is expected to be the

funeral of the century. The codename for this eventuality, Operation Unicorn, that final

tribute will be massive and will likely take place in about 10 days. The new King and

his wife Camilla, now known as the Queen Consort, stayed in Scotland last night but are due back

in London today. Imagine waking up in the morning, heading to the kitchen and sitting down

to breakfast with your teacher. For kids living in one northern California city, it's not as far

fetched as it sounds. In late August, the Milpita School District asked members of the community to

consider renting out rooms to local teachers, many of whom are priced out of the high-priced Bay Area

town. According to NPR, the district has so far received 55 responses to its request.

Last year, seven teachers left their classrooms behind to move to a more affordable area.

Home prices in that part of the country average around $1.3 million.

Hopefully our kid news classrooms bucked a troublesome trend. According to the nation's

report card, math and reading scores for nine year olds in the US plummeted during the pandemic
