Hello, welcome to political thinking.

I'm Nick Robinson.

The idea of this podcast is to have a conversation,

not partisan, not point scoring,

not limited to what's happening within the Westminster bubble,

a conversation about the big questions that we're facing.

Now, this first edition asked whether globalisation is dead. It is,

if you like, the story of my adult life. When I was at university, the barriers were coming down,

the barriers to trade, the barriers to travel, the barriers to the free movement of people and of

capital. And now there's a sense that for political reasons we all know so well,

those barriers may just be going up again.

I hear people say sometimes we have to stop and debate globalization.

You might as well debate whether autumn should follow summer.

Not only is it impossible to turn back the tide of globalization, but efforts to do so

can actually make us worse off.

This wave of globalization has wiped out totally, totally our middle class.

It doesn't have to be this way.

We can turn it around, and we can turn it around

fast. The forces of liberalism and globalisation which have held sway in Britain, America

and across the Western world for years, have left too many people behind.

Globalisation was once a force our leaders told us could simply not be resisted.
