And we begin with temperatures rising and records already falling as a long-hot heat wave

descends on the western part of the U.S. From California to Montana, the mercury is expected

to climb continuously through at least Tuesday, and already has about 50 million Americans

under excessive heat watches, warnings, or advisories. The National Weather Service

cautions conditions will be dangerously hot, with little overnight relief, which increases

the chance people may experience heat-related illness. Death Valley, California already

known for its high heat could get as high as 126 degrees this weekend, which, according

to the Washington Post, would match the highest temperature ever observed on the planet in

September. Forecasters fear the heat will further exacerbate the drought and increase fire

danger across the west.

Speaking of drought, last week we told you about California's plan to ban gas-cuzzlers.

Now the Golden State is getting ready to break ground on its next big eco-project, shading

the open-air canals that deliver water up and down the state with solar panels. Project

Nexus aims to generate energy and save water from evaporating. The project is the first

of its kind in the country, and will begin with three short stretches to see how well

it works. And if all goes to plan, experts tell CBS News that expanding the project to

cover all 4,000 miles of the state's water delivery system could potentially save 63 billion

gallons of H-20 every year.
