Here in the next picture show, we believe that no film exists in a vacuum and that all culture is more interesting

in context. So every other week, we get together to talk over a classic film and consider

how it relates to a current movie. This week, we're exploring two films from the opposite

ends of the same ape-filled franchise. Genevieve, want to guess what movies I'm talking about? Hmm. Opposite ends of an ape-filled franchise. If I had to guess, I'd say you're probably talking about the Planet of the Apes series. So that means we'll start off by discussing the 1968 film Planet of the Apes, starring Charlton Heston as an astronaut who travels to a strange, seemingly far off land in which apes evolved from humans. It's the first in what would become a long-running series that inspired four sequels, one remake from Tim Burton, and most recently a trilogy of films inspired by the original series that began with 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, then continued with dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 2014. So that means this week's episode will focus on the recent war for the planet of the apes.
