Santa Cruz is home to such a rich surf history, and I feel like much of the story hasn't really been told.

We are all aware of the characters, but I feel like sometimes the media is focused on some of the more sensational of the characters or illicit storylines that's really done a disservice to us,

the general fans or surfing public, who are just interested to hear the real basic historical

timelines and facts about who, what, when, and where.

Yeah, I think it's such a beautifully visual area, Santa Cruz, just really nice ways, you know,

and just the geography of the coastline and the land.

So I think people get pretty passionate about, you know, capturing that moment.

And so I guess that has a lot to do with how Santa Cruz has been influential with

surfing in the media just over the years.

It's been pretty prominently featured.

So I was talking with my friend, the surf photographer and filmmaker Tony Roberts.

Tony was raised in Santa Cruz and he documented a lot of the surf and skate movement in the 80s and

90s through a series of films which you've

very likely seen and we were trying to develop a plan for how it might be best to share the

stories of Santa Cruz perhaps some that haven't yet been told Tony had a lot of ideas he had a lot

of names but he said that the one guy that I should start with is Richard Schmidt.

He said there are plenty of people that came before Richard, but Richard's a great starting

point because he is universally respected and loved within the community, as well as through

the Hawaiian surfing community.
