Hello and welcome to episode 85 of Ben Franklin's world.

The podcast dedicated to helping you learn more about how the people and events of our early American

past have shaped the present-day world we live in. We often view the American

War for Independence as a conflict between Great Britain and her 13 North American colonies, but it was also a civil war.

Not only did the war pit Britain's against Britons, but the war also pitted Americans against

Americans.

We've all heard stories about the challenges faced by the Patriots, those men and women who

won the war.

But what about the other Americans involved in the conflict?

Those who remained loyal to Great Britain.

Today, Bonnie Huskins, honorary research associate and coordinator of loyalist studies

at the University of New Brunswick, joins us to explore the experiences of the American

loyalists.

During our exploration, Bonnie reveals who the American loyalists were, how individual loyalists experienced their evacuation from the United States,

and the varied experiences of the white and African American loyalists who settled in Canada.
