We have talked about the fate of Hawaiian native birds from time to time

on this show. Increasing awareness about the extinction crisis on the Hawaiian Islands is one of the

reasons why the ABA argued to add the islands to the ABA area almost a decade ago. And I have to say

from my perspective is, I don't know, Joe Bitter, that has helped.

I didn't know much about Hawaiian native birds before that conversation started happening.

I know a lot more now.

And I know about the ongoing struggles of those populations and the hard work being done by state agencies and NGOs to save these birds,

or at least to document the decline in such a way that you can shine a spotlight on it.

Climate change, of course, is a big, weird issue, and it's not always easy to know exactly

how it will affect birds on the continents.

That's not to minimize it. Of course, I think it's safe

to say that it will be generally bad, but sort of bad in, I don't know, a hundred different ways

for a hundred different species. It can be very hard to sort of wrap our minds around it.
