And we begin with a seismic shift on the horizon

and a state known for its car culture.

Today, the California Air Resources Board

is expected to announce a total ban

on the sale of new gasoline-powered cars

starting in 2035.

A former Environmental Protection Agency official

is calling the move huge.

The New York Times is reporting

that within a year or so, up to 17 other states

could potentially follow in California's footsteps

with mandates of their own.

And while 13 years may sound like a long time to wait,

the new rule sets interim targets

for the move towards zero emission vehicles,

35% by 2026 and 68% by the end of this decade.

News of the new mandate is getting a mixed reaction.

The state's governor calls it a big bold step

to lowering carbon pollution.
