slash kid news. Good morning and welcome to Kid News. I'm Kim. Today is Thursday, August 14th,

2025. And we begin with billions of gallons of water surging toward Alaska's capital.

This massive glacial outburst started in a lake that runs up against the western part of Juno

and acts, according to CNN, like a giant bucket, filling up with rain, snow, and melting ice,

and eventually gets so full that water surges into the Mendenhall River. But that river rose

to above 16 feet yesterday, according to the National Weather Service, topping a record set last year

when flooding there damaged almost 300 homes. More than a thousand people were evacuated Tuesday

night as sections of roads, trails, and areas near the river became submerged.

But so far, temporary barriers installed to protect riverfront neighborhoods appeared to be holding

pretty well. Meteorologists blame our warming climate for the outburst, which is the third to hit

the basin in three years.
