Good morning and welcome the kid news. I'm Tori. It's Wednesday, August 14, 2019 and we begin

with the Perseid meteor showers once again soaring overhead as they do every year at this time.

The event is one of the high points in the Celestial calendar and occurs when the Earth plows

through dusty debris left by Comet Swift Tuttle.

The meteors, mostly no bigger than a grain of sand,

burn up as they hit the atmosphere at 36 miles per second to produce a shooting stream of light in the sky.

However, NASA says the peak viewing

period which was yesterday morning was not that great this year because the

moon was nearly completely full. A darker sky provides a better backdrop, but there's still time to catch sight of a

meteor since Earth will be passing through the path of the old comet tail for another

ten days. One of the world's busiest airports continues to be plagued by protests.

Demonstrations initially kicked off at Hong Kong's international airport on Friday,

and the number of participants has grown steadily, some using luggage carts to block travelers from reaching their gates.

Things came to a virtual standstill on Monday as the airport closed check-in services and were equally disrupted yesterday.

Why are thousands of demonstrators who are demanding changes in the government targeting

the airport?

It's an effective way to get their message out to international travelers and therefore the

international media. Hundreds of flights have been canceled and that's messing up the travel

plans of more than 200,000 people who passed through Hong Kong's airport each and every day.
