Unprecedented wildfires burning across Maui and Hawaii's Big Island are causing widespread

damage, thousands of power outages and evacuations, with some people being rescued by the Coast Guard

after jumping into the ocean to escape fast-moving flames.

According to Hawaii News Now, I Witnesses described the scene in the historic seaside community

of Lahaina as apocalyptic. The fires fueled in part by Hurricane Dora's powerful winds

800 miles away have cut off 911 communications in many parts of the island.

As for tourists, most major airlines are waving change fees to and from Maui, and according

to CNN, the Kahului Airport is sheltering more than 1,000 stranded travelers. The Big Island

has also been hit with two brushfires forcing evacuations and power outages in the North

and South Kohala Districts.

One of the best shooting star displays of the year is set to streak across the sky this weekend.

The Perseid meteor shower will peak this Saturday into Sunday according to the American

Meteor Society. That's when the moon will be only 10 percent illuminated, making the

moonlight dimmer and stars more visible. The Perseids are fragments of a large comet called

Swift Tuttle, and according to CNN, the best seats will be in the Northern Hemisphere

just before dawn. Lucky lookers could see more than 50 stars per hour.

A potential hang-up is on the horizon for iPhone users. In a trial version of the company's

latest software update iOS 17, Apple has moved the end call button from the bottom center

of the screen to the lower right corner, where the old button used to be will be a FaceTime

call button and another to bring up the iPhone's dial pad according to CNBC. That's
