Summary

Homily from the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

We sacrifice because we love and we love because we sacrifice.

The roots in our lives can be so beneficial. Family and friends, home and homeland. But roots can also become traps. Good things can become Ultimate Things. When we say "I need this" and are willing to sacrifice anything to get or to hold on to it, we become trapped. In this, God loosens the roots and calls us to walk by faith.

0:39.2

you know, rewarded, if I don't, if I do something else, I get disciplined.

0:42.9

That kind of stability, that reality of having routes is so good and necessary for us.

0:49.4

In fact, I sometimes mourn the loss of routes in our modern culture where everyone has to

0:57.8

kind of, you're expected to leave home, you're expected to leave your family of origin,

1:01.3

you're expected to go some other place where no one knows you and like set down your own

1:05.2

routes.

1:06.2

In fact, I think routes are so important that at some point in the future we're going

1:09.9

to talk about how good they are and how, like, necessary, not today, not in the next

1:13.1

couple of weeks, but some, sometimes soon.

1:16.9

And also even naturally speaking, I mean, think about plants and trees, route, what are

1:20.8

routes do?

1:21.8

Roots are the thing that really actually keep the tree strong.

1:26.6

The routes are the things that keep them upright in the midst of storms.
