Welcome back to The Next Picture Show, a movie of the week podcast devoted to a classic film in the way it shaped our thoughts on a recent release.

I'm Tosh Robinson, here again with Scott Tobias and Genevieve Katsky. Keith's sitting this one out so he can go run up and down a beach in slow motion, but we're assuming he's going to tire himself out and then he'll be back soon.

On the first step of this episode, we looked at Betty Thomas's 199595 comedy The Brady Bunch movie, which reproduced the 1970s TV staple

the Brady Bunch on screen with just a little bit of winking at the audience about how

campy the original show looks today. In this half, we're headed to the beach for

Baywatch, featuring Dwayne Johnson and Zach Ephron as lifeguards who keep exceeding their

mandate and

running off to solve crimes. Like the Brady Bunch movie, Baywatch is full of visual gags and pointed

nods to the audience in the fourth wall, but the actors mostly keep straight faces and pretend

that they're in a real drama, where it actually makes sense for the shlobiest guy on the beach to get

hired as a lifeguard and score the girl of his dreams. And it also mostly makes sense for a murder mystery, a drug cartel blowout, and a kidnapping

to all happen within 10 feet the busiest lifeguard station on the beach.

We're staring into the abyss here. City Council's already cut our funding. It's up to us

to restore the Baywatch brand. I'm Matt Brody, ready for duty.
