I have the pleasure of being with some great priests and seminarians. Here's a mini-podcast I recorded in Rome from outside the Church of the "Holy Cross of Jerusalem" (it's on the street so you can hear the crazy Italian drivers) where Saint Helen placed the true cross that she found in Jerusalem. Is it legit? 0:00.0	So how did St Helen find the cross? I'm sitting out here on the steps in Rome in front of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem Church.
0:09.7	This church was built in 325 to house the true cross that Christ was crucified on.
0:16.4	A lot of people find this legend to be dubious and understandably so but the legend in the tradition of finding the
0:26.6	true cross is interesting I want to share it with you and you can make your
0:29.3	own judgments but St. Helen went to Jerusalem and she met with the Bishop there and she asked to find the true cross.
0:39.0	And it was buried in a well beneath a pagan shrine. The Romans had built and erected a
0:46.2	shrine over the location the crucifixion. She had it torn down. They went into
0:51.2	the well and there they found multiple crosses.
0:53.5	Traditions says three crosses, allegedly the cross of Christ and the cross of the two
0:59.2	thieves.
1:00.2	Well of course this poses a problem because you don't know which cross is the cross of Christ,
1:06.0	and that's the one she wants.
1:08.0	So they had a great solution for this.
1:10.5	They found a sick person, they touched the crosses to the invalid, to the sick person.
1:18.0	And when one of the crosses healed the sick person, they knew that that was the true cross of Christ.
1:25.0	And so that's the cross that she brought to Jerusalem,
1:28.0	and it was housed in this holy church of the Holy Cross.
1:31.0	And then much later, the Pope brought the main beam the large
1:35.6	piece of it to St. Peter's Basilica where it's enshrined near the high
1:39.5	altar but there are still pieces of the true cross
1:42.9	inside this beautiful church along with one of the nails
1:47.4	allegedly that was used in Christ.
