Here on The Next Picture Show, we believe that no film exists in a vacuum, and that all culture is more interesting in context.

So every other week, we get together to talk over a classic film and consider how it

relates to a current movie. This week, we've got two movies about body snatchers, but not the

1950s kind, so much as the cyberpunk future kind. Scott, tell us what we have selected for

upload this week. Rupert Sanders' new remake of the 1995 anime classic Ghost in the Shell has

had a hard time in theaters and a hard time with cultural

critics who objected from the start to the casting of Scarlett Johansson as major, better

known as Motoko Okusanagi. Complaints of character whitewashing have dominated the conversation

about the movie. We'll get into that a bit here, but there are a lot of other elements of the

movie worth discussing. And one of the big ones is the way the live action Ghost in the Shell draws inspiration from American science fiction touchstones like the 1999

future thriller The Matrix, which suggested that we're all living in a depressing simulation
