Summary

Another deep dive episode, and this one feels like it shouldn't have taken so long! We're reading Run Posy Run, talking about the way Cate C. Wells walks a fine line of mafia romance while keeping the book on the morality chain side of the line from dark romance. We talk about heroines against the wall, heroes who have to suffer, the way violence fits into these romances, and about sex and how it's deployed in these books to enormous effect.

We love this one (as you all know), and we were so excited to go back to it and give it the deep read it deserved. You can find all of our deep dives at the Fated Mates Book Club.

It's that time of year again--Sarah's next book, These Summer Storms (complete with sexy, silent, deeply competent hero) is out in July and she is going on tour! What's more, there is a real deal Fated Mates LIVE planned for July 8th in St. Louis, MO! Get tickets to any of these events (Jen will be at a bunch of them, and other pod friends will be popping up along the way) at sarahmaclean.net/tour! If you can't make the tour, you can preorder These Summer Storms signed with a special romance dust jacket from The Ripped Bodice.

Is summertime in New York awesome? Because summertime in Chicago is awesome.

Say more.

0:06.5

It's just like, I think part of it is. I've lived here for 25 years. So, you know, like, like everybody's out at the bars and there's all these rooftop bars and everyone's on the lake running and on their bikes and wearing cute dresses. And you know what I mean mean? Like there's like a summertime Chicago vibe

0:22.8

that's very celebratory. I do think Chicago's probably like on-balance five to 10 degrees cooler

0:27.7

maybe than New York. It's been a brutal spring. It's been the worst. It's, uh, New York is very

0:34.8

hot. It gets gross and humid and hot and yucky. I mean, what I will say is all

0:41.8

of those things are also true. Like, there are outdoor markets. And, like, I'm so excited the

0:46.1

farmers market is back this weekend. And, like, there's, you know, all sorts of, like, cool

0:51.5

stuff related to, yes, outdoor seating, bars, all the gardens are open.

0:57.5

Listen, everyone certainly seemed to be outside to watch that boat run into the Brooklyn Bridge.

1:02.5

Listen, the Mexican Navy lost control of their great ship.

1:08.3

I know. Well, you sent me the video about the lady who

1:11.1

explained if she thinks it got stuck in reverse or whatever.

1:13.3

There is this great video by a lady who's a professional mariner. And I was like,

1:19.4

you're a real life romance heroine and I appreciate you. I love you, my friend. And she was like,

1:24.8

listen, there's a lot of questions. And I will say, I was asking them.

1:29.0

You're like, what happened?

1:30.2

Yeah, I'm like, the Brickland Bridge has been there for like close to 150 years. So could

1:36.3

somebody explain to me why the fuck the ship thought that it could go under it? And she was like, dummies.

1:42.5

The ship did not think it was going under it. Her theory is that

1:46.1

it was stuck in reverse. Well, and it was really interesting to hear her, like, at one point,

1:51.9

like, talk about how difficult is to navigate the East River or whatever. I would never,
