2018 and we begin with updates on two big natural disasters. First that huge wildfire burning near Yosemite is now within two miles of the park.

Officials say there's no reason yet to close the valley to visitors, even though smoke is heavy and blocking some of the views.

Attendance is reportedly still good, but many tourists venturing in are doing so wearing masks.

And in Hawaii, geologists keeping an eye on the Kilauea volcano say it could continue to erupt for months or even years.

Its red-hot lava has already covered 12 square miles and added 700 new acres to the island.

Yesterday we told you about the Celebrity Guest lineup for Shark Week on the Discovery Channel.

As it turns out, one of those guests,

basketball great Chakeel O'Neill,

had to be pulled from a shark cage

when a tooty visitor wiggled between the bars

and joined him inside.

Divers pulled Shack out, gave him a moment to regroup,

then because he knows a thing or two about rebounding,

send him back down again.

Also airing on the series this week, video of Deep Blue, a 20 foot long

great white shark believed to be the largest great white ever caught on film. Starbuck's opening a new store generally isn't news,

but this story has little to do with coffee

and everything to do with compassion.
