Summary

Much of North America is gripped in the depths of winter. It’s cold. It’s snowy. It’s frequently unpleasant. But for those that push through, the birding can be oh so rewarding. This is especially true in places where the winter hits hardest. Diehard Minnesota birder Erik Bruhnke is guide for Victor Emanuel Nature Tours and a stalwart at birding festivals. He joins Nate to talk about winter birding, leading bird tours and cool bird facts.

0:29.9	I am Nate Swick. If you remember way back to 2022, I mentioned that I was in Costa Rica with my family for winter break. I meant to
0:40.7	talk a little bit about that trip here. I have a couple of recommendations, a couple of thoughts.
0:45.1	If you're traveling down that way, I would have touched on it last week, but, you know,
0:48.4	bird of the year stuff was pressing. Hello, belted kingfisher. So let's go way back to the end of

0:54.6	I'm heading to Costa Rica with my non-burning, but enthusiastic about nature, family.
1:00.5	And people have asked, you know, how do you go to a place that's known for birding
1:06.0	with a non-burning family?
1:07.7	And I've been to Costa Rica before a couple times, so I'd seen a lot of the things I wanted to see there. And in retrospect, that's probably the best recommendation I can make if you are traveling with non-birders. Go somewhere you've been before. I realize that's not always an option for everyone. But I will say it did soothe the birding edge quite a bit. I didn't really feel like I was missing anything by focusing
1:28.6	on less bird-intensive activities. I was happy to have the birds come to me instead of going
1:35.1	to the birds. We did go to a part of the country I'd never been to before, though, the northwest
1:40.6	corner around Liberia. Would highly recommend Liberia as a destination.
1:45.2	The airport is small and easy and not close to any city.
1:48.9	Not that Liberia is even much of a city.
1:51.0	But once you're out, you're out, and you can get to where you need to go easily.
