The Hello and welcome to Disney Story Origins episode 6b The Little Mermaid part 2. The When we left both Disney's and Hans Christian Anderson's little mermaids,

both had decided to pay a visit to the sea witch.

Ariel had a Moray eel escort and saw very little action, whereas the original little mermaid had to travel past whirlpools,

scary woods, and nasty polypy that would have happily seized her, dragged her down, and suffocated her.

Both mermaids made it to the sea witch's lair, and in both stories both witches are

happy to help for a price. Let's get started, shall we?

Now I'm going to go back and forth here a little quicker than usual

because while in Disney's version there are some

obvious similarities there's also a huge separation from the original.

For starters in the original the Sea Witch's house is made out of the bones

of shipwrecked humans and in Disney's story

Ursula's lair is inside the remains of a giant sea monster. In the original

story the witch is obviously known throughout the kingdom, but there's no mention of her reputation among the Murfolk.

But in Disney story, Ursula is well known for being a devious evildoer who'd been kicked out of Triton's palace,

probably for doing evil.

But in the original story,

it seems she's just an old witch out in a scary part of the ocean

who makes deals with mermaids

if they survive the journey to her home.

In both stories the sea witch is already well aware of what the little mermaid desires

most.

Ursula, because she was spying, and the original sea witch, because she was spying and the original see witch because she just knows.
