0:00.0 | Okay, buddy. This is a conversation I've been looking forward to. As always, when we read a book together, or consume an audio book together, we avoid discussing it, and this book has been very hard not to discuss, because this book was very powerful. |
0:25.0 | And I'm talking about the Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton, which you recommended to me. |
0:30.0 | Yes. |
0:31.0 | First of all, thank you for this recommendation. |
0:34.0 | Thanks for listening to it. Appreciate it. |
0:36.0 | This was a powerful experience. We can talk more about exactly how it was a powerful experience and a bit. |
0:42.0 | But I guess before I ask you a question here, for the third chair, if someone has not listened to the Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton, you should. |
0:53.0 | But you don't have to do that to appreciate what this conversation is going to be about. |
0:58.0 | Okay, why did you recommend this book to me? |
1:01.0 | Well, it changed my life for many different reasons. |
1:05.0 | I think the best way to start here is just to try to explain what happened to Anthony Ray Hinton and how he dealt with that. |
1:13.0 | And then we can kind of unpack it. Is that work for you? |
1:16.0 | And I want to put a disclaimer out with you, my friend. |
1:20.0 | This book tripped my fury over injustice trigger like few things ever had. |
1:27.0 | And so I'm going to try to be composed and dignified and stuff during this conversation, because I think that's important. |
1:33.0 | But so much of the power of this book was the anger that he evoked in me. |
1:39.0 | And I cried through a quarter of this book with my goofy princess Leia headphones on working in the yard just bawling constantly. |
1:50.0 | It wasn't the kind of crying where oh, that's so beautiful and tender. |
1:53.0 | It's the kind of crying where I was just broken down by the cruelty and at a loss with anger at what happened to him. |
2:01.0 | And so I'm going to do my best, man, but this book moved me in a lot of ways. |
2:07.0 | And I'm still not quite sure what I'm doing with it emotionally. Fair enough? |
2:12.0 | Yeah, that's fair enough. I think you got to be careful with those emotions, because I think a big part of like if Anthony Ray Hinton was sitting in front of you right now, I don't think he would want you to feel that way. |
