Summary

John Oller, a former Wall Street lawyer, tells the story of a new type of "White Shoe" lawyer. These lawyers were architects of the monopolistic new corporations so despised by many, and acted as guardians who helped the kings of industry fend off government overreaching. Yet they also quietly steered their robber baron clients away from a "public be damned" attitude toward more enlightened corporate behavior during a period of progressive, turbulent change in America.

Wall Street Lawyers changed big business and the American century. And it's true. They really

all the huge businesses of, you know, the 19, like 1890s to 1920-ish era as when they were

0:53.5

J.P. Morgan, huge companies that I think most people

0:56.7

have a negative perception of, but John tells the full story and admits that they were flawed

1:03.6

individuals and human beings potentially, but shares the good that they offered, like helping the New York City transportation system and creating better borrowing and finance, sorry.

1:17.6

And they really did limit their clients, their large companies.

1:22.6

They really limited the power that they could have and increased transparency. So in a way, they did some

good stuff. So it's an interesting story and something that we're kind of seeing again today

1:33.4

with huge Google, Apple, Amazon, all this stuff. So the story is kind of coming back around again.

1:39.9
