| 1:04.8 | 1846. We talked about how the war was connected to the United States in |
| 1:09.7 | Exation of Texas and to the concept of manifest destiny. And to the evil |
| 1:15.7 | designs lurking in James K. Polk's dark little expansionist heart. Rich. Okay |
| 1:21.8 | anyway we also talked about the start of hostilities in April 1846 between the |
| 1:29.0 | Mexican Army and the American soldiers in Texas under the command of General |
| 1:33.7 | Zachary Taylor. Right and it's important to remember that the force which |
| 1:38.7 | Taylor took to Texas was composed of infantry cavalry and artillery units |
| 1:43.6 | from the regular army. That means those soldiers both enlisted men and |
| 1:48.1 | officers were professionals. Being in the army was their occupation. It's what |
| 1:54.1 | they did for a living right. But then the complexion of the war changed quite |
| 1:58.4 | dramatically in mid to late 1846 when large numbers of American volunteer units |
| 2:04.8 | started to show up for the fight with Mexico. As we mentioned at the close of |
| 2:09.2 | the last show after hostilities had commenced Congress authorized the |
| 2:13.9 | raising of thousands of volunteers all of whom Congress authorized to be signed |
| 2:19.0 | up for 12 months of military service. Large numbers of volunteers were needed |
