Today is Wednesday, June 24th, 2020 and we begin with a history question not

just for the kids listening but for our kid news parents and

teachers as well. What state in the US has an official name longer than the one we all

use? Rhode Island which is officially in the books as the state of Rhode Island

and Providence plantations. The word plantation is associated with slavery leading up to the Civil War. And now, given the renewed national conversation about race,

the last half appears headed for the chopping block.

The governor once it gone and ordered the issue put on the ballot in November.

In the meantime, Rhode Island will stop using the full title on all official documents and its website immediately.

Teddy Roosevelt's night at the museum is over, but Andrew Jackson's day at the park is, for now, still on.

On Monday, protesters in Washington DC tried but failed to pull down

his statue in Lafayette Square. At issue Mr Jackson's treatment of Native Americans

when he was the nation's seventh president in the 1800s.

A few hundred miles to the north, the American Museum of Natural History in New York City

isn't waiting for trouble. It's already decided to move to

mothballs the statue of Teddy Roosevelt on horseback. The monument has

guarded the entrance since 1940 but has long been controversial because it shows the 26th

president flanked by two men, one black and one indigenous, both on foot and

depicted as inferior. Even Roosevelt's great-grandson supports the decision to

relocate, saying the statute does not reflect the values of equity and justice.
