Good morning and welcome to Kid News. I'm Kim. Today is Friday, June 13th, 2025. Our last day on the air until August 11th. And we begin with a trifecta of events tomorrow. Not only is there a huge military parade in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the

Army's 250th anniversary, but it's also President Trump's birthday and flag day. For the version of

Old Glory that flies today, we can thank an Ohio teenager, who in 1958 whipped up at first of

its kind 50-star flag for a class assignment.

Bob Heff's teacher gave him a B-minus, saying the design was unrealistic since the U.S. only

had 48 states at that time.

Bob was thinking ahead, rightfully believing that Alaska and Hawaii would soon join the

Union, so his teacher told him, get it accepted into

Washington, then come back, and I might consider changing your grade. The teen spent the next two

years trying to sell the White House on his design. In 1960, his persistence paid off. Then

President Eisenhower called Bob to say his flag was chosen out of more than a thousand to become the official version.

And yes, Bob's teacher made good on his promise and bumped his grade up to an A.
