Summary

Today’s expression and dialog: to give someone the benefit of the doubt Where’s Mark? He’s late. He said he got a flat tire. And you believed him. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. I really do NOT like when people PROMISE to do something for me and then they don't do it AND LIE! Not doing a promise, that can happen. But just tell me the truth. You forgot OR you were busy OR you didn't want to OR you didn't know how...but don't lie to me. Don't say, "My um...my grandmother was ill and I had to take care of her because she was really sick and I love my grandmother...BLAH BLAH BLAH..."However, you know, sometimes that "lie" is actually TRUE! So...sometimes we need to "trust" people. And today I have a perfect expression for you to use in these situations^^Have a GREAT Friday and a wonderful weekend!Coach Shane Please subscribe on iTunes and get this podcast EVERY DAY! 0:56.1

There's no B sound.

0:57.4

Don't say doubt-ut.

0:58.5

Just say doubt.

1:01.1

To give someone the benefit of the doubt.

1:07.5

Now, this is a long expression, and I'm going to give you a really easy definition.

1:17.2

The idea is somebody gave you an excuse. You know, they're late or they didn't do their homework or they cannot meet you, something. They give you an excuse like, I have no money,

1:34.3

my mother is sick. my car is broken, something like that, right?

1:40.3

Now, depending on the friend, you might not believe them.

1:43.2

You might suspect that they're just lying.

1:51.2

But when we use the expression to give someone the benefit of the doubt, even though it sounds like they could be lying, anyway, you're going to believe them and accept their excuse. Okay? So let me give you a real

quick example. The real estate guy that I had in Boulder City was bad. I mean, he was just

useless. I would set an appointment with him 9 a.m. and he wouldn't come.

2:22.6

And I would call and he wouldn't answer his phone. Finally at 10.30, I get a hold of him. I say, hey, Mike, what's up? Where are you? We're supposed to be together here at 9 o'clock. Oh my God. I'm so sorry. My daughter was sick and I went to the hospital and my phone battery died. I'm going there now. I'll be there in 10 minutes. Now, I don't believe, Mike.

2:54.4

I'm quite certain he's lying because it's not the first time.

2:59.7

But maybe his daughter was sick and that's a tragedy.
