Hello, everybody, welcome back to Daily Easy English Expression.

Today's expression is a little bit long, listen carefully, to give someone the benefit of the doubt.

So one more time to give someone the benefit, B-E-N-E-F-I-T, of the doubt.

D-O-U-B-T.

The B is silent.

There's no B sound.

Don't say doubt-ut.

Just say doubt.

To give someone the benefit of the doubt.

Now, this is a long expression, and I'm going to give you a really easy definition.

The idea is somebody gave you an excuse. You know, they're late or they didn't do their homework or they cannot meet you, something. They give you an excuse like, I have no money,

my mother is sick. my car is broken, something like that, right?

Now, depending on the friend, you might not believe them.

You might suspect that they're just lying.

But when we use the expression to give someone the benefit of the doubt, even though it sounds like they could be lying, anyway, you're going to believe them and accept their excuse. Okay? So let me give you a real

quick example. The real estate guy that I had in Boulder City was bad. I mean, he was just

useless. I would set an appointment with him 9 a.m. and he wouldn't come.

And I would call and he wouldn't answer his phone. Finally at 10.30, I get a hold of him. I say, hey, Mike, what's up? Where are you? We're supposed to be together here at 9 o'clock. Oh my God. I'm so sorry. My daughter was sick and I went to the hospital and my phone battery died. I'm going there now. I'll be there in 10 minutes. Now, I don't believe, Mike.

I'm quite certain he's lying because it's not the first time.

But maybe his daughter was sick and that's a tragedy.
