Today’s expression and dialog: to sugarcoat SMT So, how’d you like my poem? Well…it was nice. Come on! Don’t sugarcoat it! Tell me. Um… Don’t quit your day job. So, a little girl was sitting next to me at the coffee shop yesterday. She was about 4. She was drawing a picture. While she was drawing, she kept looking at me. After a few minutes, she said, "Here!" and she gave me her picture. I had NO IDEA what she made. I thought it was a monster or maybe a dog... Then she told me, "It's you! Do you like it?" I told her, "This is the WORST drawing I have ever seen. You are a terrible artist." OF COURSE I DIDN'T SAY THAT! I said, "Oh, wow! I really love my hair! Thank you!!" And she was very happy. Actually, I did like the hair she drew. It was a lot of hair! But did I lie to her? 0:34.4	Today we have a nice word, sugarcoat.
0:46.3	And we use this as a verb to sugarcoat something. S g a r c o a t it's one word now to sugarcoat something means to put sugar on something so example, you make a donut.
0:55.5	And on top of the donut, you put sugar on there.
1:01.5	You are sugar coating the donut.
1:05.3	But we use this expression when we tell people how they did.
1:13.3	If we give somebody criticism or if somebody sings a song and they say, how did I do?
1:20.3	And we say, well, you did terrible.
1:24.7	That's not nice.
1:26.7	So we sugarcoat it. We say, well, you did okay in the beginning.
1:33.7	So sugarcoating something means being nice when you actually want to be not nice.
1:47.4	So once again, you want to tell somebody you are ugly, but that's not nice.
1:56.6	So you say, you are very interesting looking.
2:00.8	You want to tell somebody you are fat, but that's not nice.
2:05.6	So you sugarcoat it and you say, you look very, very healthy.
2:12.7	Oh, this is so not nice.
2:14.4	I know.
2:15.2	Yesterday wasn't nice.
2:16.6	Today's not nice. But you know Yesterday wasn't nice. Today's not nice.
