0:00.0	Of all the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, none has so captivated the world as
0:09.0	her appearance to three children at Fatima in Portugal in 1917.
0:15.2	The three children were Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto.
0:21.5	They were poor and had little education. Yet one day, while they were
0:25.9	tending sheep, they found themselves conversing with an angel. The angel taught
0:30.9	them how to grow when their practice of prayer, and he encouraged them to make
0:35.0	sacrifices. He seemed to be preparing them for some great task. The nature of that
0:41.6	task became clear on May 13th of that year when the children were
0:45.5	visited by a lady who was luminous, brighter than the sun, they said, with a light that
0:51.8	was purer than crystal.
0:54.1	Her message to the children was much like the message they heard from the angel.

1:02.0	The children agreed among themselves not to tell anyone about their heavenly visitors,
1:07.1	but just sent to let slip with their mother, and soon, the whole village knew.
1:12.4	Then words spread beyond the village. Crowds began to gather around the children on the 13th day of
1:18.0	each month. The day the lady regularly appeared. Portugal, like many countries during that time, was experiencing a heavy
1:26.6	handed wave of secularization. Revolutionary movements throughout Europe sought to weaken
1:32.8	the Church's influence, and they did this through law, propaganda, and even state-sponsored
1:38.5	bullying. As reports of the apparitions went abroad, local officials were embarrassed.
1:45.1	They forced the children to undergo harsh interrogations and even jailed them for a time.
1:50.9	The local clergy were hardly more supportive,
1:53.6	and many people feared that the apparitions were a hoax,
