Summary

Today’s expression and dialog: to chime in I completely disagreed with John. Really? Yes! He was totally wrong. Why didn’t you chime in? Do you think your opinion is important? I hope you do! Do you freely tell your opinion to other people? Sometimes that is good, but sometimes it's not! To know WHEN to "tell other people" your opinion is really difficult. I don't know the answer. Sometimes I am happy that I spoke, sometimes I regret it. I can say this, NOT having spoke has caused me MORE problems than having spoke. Today's expression is about SPEAKING. 1:03.2

To chime in. It's a phrasal verb to chime, C-H-I-M-E, in. Now, to chime basically means to make a tone like ding, ding, like on a bell or even a piano, to chime in. It means to interrupt or to give your opinion or to say something. That's all it means. So I want you to chime in if you have an

1:18.8

idea. If you have an idea, tell me. I want you to chime in if you disagree. If your opinion is different from me, tell me. That's all it means.

1:32.1

It's a great phrasal verb. Let's check out the dialogue.

that we give our opinion.

2:08.4

We have to understand that we might not agree with the person next to us.

2:15.0

We might not agree with the country next to us. We might not agree with the country next to us. We might not agree with the

2:20.3

country overseas. But it's important to give our opinions. It's important to chime in and tell

2:30.0

other people what we think. But at the same time, we need to respect each other. And,

2:37.7

I don't know. That's just my opinion. If you have an idea or an opinion, or if you want to say

2:45.9

something that is important to you, do you chime in or do you stay quiet?

2:53.6

Yeah.

2:55.6

I guess sometimes we should stay quiet, but sometimes we need to chime in.
