By 86, Rome's conquest of Germania, at least in the West, was progressing well, despite

heavy resistance from local tribes and the shedding of much blood. But in that year, attention was

diverted by a major rebellion which broke out in Illyria in the Balkans. Tiberius, Augustus'

stepson and future emperor, were sent with eight legions to queer the revolt. It was thought in Rome

that this region had already been pacified.

Instead, it took four years of intense fighting to regain authority there, in a war described by

the Roman historian Suetonius as the most difficult conflict faced by Rome since the Punic Wars.
