There is a fascinating tradition in the Talmud that asks the question,

not worshipping idols when they were engaged in Torah study and good deeds, etc.

And the answer is, because of baseless hatred in Hebrew Sinat Ghanam.

And the Talmud then deduces from this, this is in Yoma 9b,

the Talmud deduces from this that baseless hatred is equal to idolatry,

sexual immorality, and the shedding of innocent blood.
