Oh boys bear with me I've done a little reporting.

You'll recall on Friday we were made privy to a newsletter from the Minnesota Department of Transportation in which a woman named Gina Kundin came up with a list of words that she finds problematic.

You recall that among them were sinister and peanut gallery for example and I really that the peanut gallery one gets stuck in my craw.

So I looked it up and I can't there is no evidence of a racial component to peanut gallery none whatsoever.

From ranging from the Oxford dictionary to prominent etymologists who study things like this there is no racial connection no racial history to the term peanut gallery if you if you go to even some more obscure websites people struggle valiantly to make that connection.

But even in those sites they remain agnostic and end up saying we can find no basically say we can find no evidence.

So a couple of points before I get to my reporting the more I think about it blacks in the late in the late 19th century weren't they already walking on egg shells weren't they poorly treated is that a fair statement.

And so but but so they felt emboldened enough to go into the balcony of a vaudeville theater and throw peanuts at the actors that doesn't make sense I wondered about that myself it doesn't make sense of plus given the way blacks were so poorly treated in the late 19th century you would think something far more offensive would have been termed rather than the charming term peanut gallery right yes.

So that's so so so so I'm not buying it and then I we asked Gina cooned into come on the air we left her phone message I want to know where she gets her evidence I naively thought Friday when we saw or made made privy to this newsletter I naively thought that that the Minnesota Department of Transportation probably didn't have their own office of equity and diversity I thought I thought maybe that was a state.

Office of equity and diversity that was supplying that piece to various state employees men dot employees among them well it turns out I was naive the Minnesota Department of Transportation has its own equity and diversity office thought I made that clear I'm sorry well here they are I did know that.

She's been given every opportunity to call I suspect she might not you don't think she downloads the podcast every day I doubt I really doubt it but it so let's give her the benefit of the doubt that she's not lying at the very least she's manipulating I will use the term manipulating these people as I told you the other day they need something to do so they're inventing this stuff out of whole cloth.

I can find no evidence zero that peanut gallery has anything to do with black people none none.
