And we begin with an orangutan's do-it-yourself first aid kit causing a sensation among scientists.

In the wilds of a Sumatran rainforest, researchers watched as a great ape named Rakuz applied a tropical plant to an open wound on his cheek.

Scientists are marveling at how Rakuz intentionally plucked and chew the leaves of the Leana vine, which is known to humans for having anti-inflammatory

and pain relieving properties and applied the juices directly to his cut.

He then doubled down and used the leaves as a makeshift bandage.

One week later, the injury was gone.

While Apes have been known to use plants and leaves to combat stomach issues

and even sore muscles, this is believed to be the first documented case of a wild animal

treating a skin wound with a substance known to have medicinal properties.

The findings appear in the journal Scientific Reports.
