| 0:49.4 | It's not bad advice, but the truth is doing these things might or might not help you. Take exercise for |
| 0:56.3 | example. It's true that people who live very active lifestyles tend to suffer from |
| 1:00.8 | constipation less often than those who are more sedentary. |
| 1:03.7 | And should you find yourself immobilized by an accident or surgery, for example, |
| 1:09.5 | you might have some constipation as a result of the physical inactivity, so it seems logical that exercise would be a good way to treat irregularity. |
| 1:18.0 | But actually, studies have found that when normally active people are suffering from constipation, |
| 1:24.0 | getting more exercise doesn't really improve things. |
| 1:27.8 | Now, don't get me wrong, exercise is still a great idea, |
| 1:31.2 | but its reputation as a cure for constipation might be somewhat exaggerated. |
| 1:36.0 | Drinking more fluids might not be as helpful as you hope either. |
| 1:40.2 | Dehydration can cause constipation, but the fact is that most people who are constipated |
| 1:44.4 | are not actually dehydrated. You might recall from my episode on the |
| 1:48.5 | dehydration myth, coffee and tea are not dehydrating and they're not constipating. |
