Summary

Have you ever wondered how our modern calendar came to be? How about the possibility of a rogue asteroid or a doomsday comet that threatens life on earth?

Join Duncan and myself as we discuss the earliest attempts at a calendar, inaccuracies with our current calendar, and even the potential for a doomsday impact and how we can prevent it!

Hello and welcome to the 44th episode of Curiosityness. I'm the host, Travis DeRose, and I have on Duncan Steele.

0:11.5

Now, Duncan Steel is crazy awesome. We basically talk about his bookmarking time, but we talk about how

0:18.9

days, weeks, months, and years are all the

0:24.1

length they are and, you know, how the calendar was established and how kind of the modern

0:29.8

calendar came to be and everything. So it's super duper fun. But Duncan is a scientist and we really get down into some stuff.

0:40.0

This was kind of the like lazy man's interview because I just set Duncan off with a question or two and he just went and he just dives into all this stuff.

0:49.1

And it's extremely interesting and fun, but he goes deep.

0:51.8

So you've got to stick with it and focus in this a bit,

0:55.0

but it's definitely worth it. There's a lot of really cool, fun information that he shares.

0:59.9

And I really had a great time talking to him. And then also something that we dive into,

1:04.7

probably about halfway, two-thirds through is about the potential of some sort of big asteroid or comet coming and hitting

1:13.3

the earth and, you know, the small odds of that, but the catastrophic effects that that would

1:19.2

have. And, you know, he talks a lot about that, which is also extremely interesting. So,

1:23.9

without further ado, I'm going to let Duncan do some talking, and here is episode 44.

1:32.7

And boom, we're going. How's it going, Duncan?

1:36.9

Yeah, well, good. I'm here in Nelson, New Zealand, where it's a beautiful sunny day, a few clouds around.

1:43.3

Obviously, we've had a real catastrophe here with a terrorist attacking Christchurch

1:48.5

and the whole of the country is somewhat muted, I would say, today, and we'll continue to be

1:53.5

for some time.

1:54.5

Yeah, I can imagine.

1:55.5

Yeah, I just heard about that.

1:56.5

That's crazy.
