Good morning and welcome to Kid News. I'm Kim. Today is Tuesday, April 25, 2023, and

we begin with an explosive discovery under the sea made by scientists who study space.

More than 19,000 previously unknown underwater volcanoes or sea mounts have been discovered

in the world's oceans by European, Indian, and French space agencies. According to the

science times, only one quarter of the sea floor has been mapped by sonar, and while thousands

of volcanoes were discovered in 2011, these ones were only detectable using high-resolution

radar data, which picks up subtle changes in seawater. Geophysicists say the findings

are mind-boggling and hugely helpful. Sea mounts can be navigational hazards for boats and

submarines, and deep sea miners are interested in their rare earth minerals. They are also

crucial OACs for marine life, and can help scientists prepare for climate change by

better understanding how the sea floor is shaped. The findings are detailed in a new

sea-mount catalog in the publication Earth and Space Science.

While we know all your teachers deserve the National Teacher of the Year award, only one

can get it. This year's top honor went to Rebecca Peterson, a math teacher at Union High

School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who is top for 14 years. She and four other finalists were

honored at the White House yesterday by the President and First Lady, as well as Education

Secretary Miguel Cardona. In addition to teaching, Peterson has a blog called One Good Thing,

where she posts positive updates from her classroom. So far, there are more than 1,400.

She told CBS what she noticed most about writing good things every day is that when I took

the time to notice the good, the good became better.
