Montreal, Seattle and London meantime are ringing church bells in support and to mark the start of the rebuilding process.

President Emmanuel Macron is vowing to get the job

done in just five years. That's a tall order but already more than 700 million

dollars in donations have poured in, the bulk of it from three of the wealthiest companies in France.

Their generosity and that of others is topped only by stories of heroism,

most notably a French priest who dashed into the burning

building to retrieve the crown of thorns, a religious relic some believe was

warned by Jesus himself.
