Hello, I'm Alicia McCarthy, and this is today in Parliament from BBC Radio 4 for Tuesday the 4th of March,

where a minister sets out plans to tackle plots against the UK from Iran.

The government is absolutely committed to ensuring that our intelligence and law enforcement

agencies have the tools they need to disrupt and degrade the threats that we face.

Also tonight, the BBC admits the controversial Gaza documentary has damaged the corporation.

There's a dagger to the heart of the BBC's claim to be impartial and to be trustworthy.

And a former Prime Minister says the time has come to spend frozen Russian money on Ukraine.

Now is the moment to go further and to actually seize those assets.

But first, the government has set out

new measures to tackle people targeting the UK on behalf of the Iranian regime. The proposals

include possible five-year jail sentences and looking at new ways of applying anti-terrorism laws.

The security minister Dan Jarvis told MPs the UK faced a growing threat.

The regime has become increasingly emboldened, asserting itself more aggressively to advance

their objectives and undermine ours.

This is evidenced by the fact that direct action against UK targets has substantially increased over recent years.

The Director General of MI5 recently stated that since the start of 2022, the UK has responded to 20,

Iran-backed plots, presenting potentially lethal threats to British citizens and UK residents.

The Minister said Iran was targeting dissidents and journalists reporting on its oppression

and Jewish people and Israelis internationally.

He said the plots were an attempt to stifle criticism through intimidation and fear.
