42-year-old Sonia Varyskine was living the life she had always dreamed. Her free-spirited nature guided her all around the world on trips for both business and pleasure.

After spending a great deal of time trying to determine what career path would best suit her, she settled on nursing.

Sonia had a kind, compassionate heart, and her own life had been touched by loss and sickness within her family.

Inside, she had a natural grace and empathy that suited her perfectly for a life spent aiding others and easing them through difficult times.

As a nurse, she spent her time working mostly with children, first, those with neurological issues, and then she later transitioned into the cancer ward.

It was a hard job and it could be emotionally overwhelming, but Sonia took pride in her work and even more so believed it was her calling.

She spent her days comforting others and was like a beautiful beam of light into a darkness they had to traverse.

Though she never married, nor had children, her patients and their families became like her own.

In August of 2010, Sonia hit a rough patch with her job.

She had some difficulties with a supervisor, and while she very much wanted to continue down her path, she felt it was time to move on somewhere else.

Her stress level was rising, and she was having some difficulties at home too, with some new, loud tenets, a few doors down.

While Sonia wasn't married, she did have a boyfriend, though that relationship was entering a transitional period also.

What had begun as a very loving and devoted relationship was, at this point, more of an on-again, off-again transaction that wasn't quite fulfilling her needs.

On Sunday, August 29, Sonia visited her parents' home in Bolton, Ontario.

Her father washed her car while she stayed inside, talking to her mother and younger brother.

She had found a new job, and needed to brush up on her French, as the position required her to be bilingual.

The stress of the early half of the month seemed to have washed away, and she was back to being the beaming happy woman they become so used to having around.

That afternoon, when she left, she told her parents she'd call soon, but the phone never rang.
