You are listening to part 2 of a conversation with Kent Larson about the recent acquisition

of Segal Book and Tapes by Deseret Book.

So your concern is...

Out of line is culture is important and the Church is chosen, they are not going to be

the supportive organization.

In a lot of ways I think that's a good thing because if the Church was the one doing all

the supporting, then I think there would be an inherent feeling or need that they should

try to control all of this cultural outpouring and there would be as a result less diversity

and controversy about things that shouldn't be controversial, whether you can sing modern

music as a Mormon choir or not, might be an issue where it isn't now.

So this reminds me of history repeating itself a tiny bit.

As I read the book, Adventures of the Church Historian by Leonard Aggett, some apostles

in the late 1960s and early 70s, especially as a result of Fond Brodie's book, No Man

Knows My History, recognized that we were getting our lunch eaten by secular historians

that were not painting Mormonism in a favorable light.

So they asked Leonard Arrington to come and head up a church history headquarters where

he then by the church's support starts commissioning new literature, history to try and deal with
