This week on the Catholic Sprouts podcast, we have been talking about angels.

First, we talked about what an angel is and how they are a pure spiritual being and we will see them in heaven one day.

Yesterday we talked about some wrong ideas that we might have about angels and we cleared up the

fact that angels are real, that we will not become an angel when we die, and that angels are not just sweetness and light,

but actually the very army of God.

Today we are going to talk about guardian angels.

Now the feast of guardian angels is actually next week, October 2nd, but we're going to talk about it today,

and I hope that you remember these things and celebrate your guardian angel in a special way next week.

So first of all, many saints throughout history have believed and taught that each of us have a special angel looking over us.

St. Basil wrote, that beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.

So that means that each of us in this very moment has an angel watching over us.

And their main reason to watch over us is, as St. Basil said, to lead us to life. Meaning, to lead us to heaven. An angel, of course,

protects us from bodily harm, but their real purpose is to protect us from temptation.

Now, an angel has real power, and it is a beautiful thing to acknowledge the angel standing beside you.

In fact, many years ago, it was a common practice in schools for teachers to tell their students to scoot over in their seat and make room for their guardian angel.

Now, of course, we would never really need to scoot over for our guardian angels because,

as we learned, angels don't have a body, just the spirit, but is an important factor to

remember that they are always there.

It also is possible to pray and have the name of your guardian angel revealed to you.
