Here on the next picture show, we believe that no film exists in a vacuum and that all culture is more interesting in context.

So every other week, we get together to talk over a classic

film and consider how it relates to a current movie. This week, we ain't afraid to know ghosts,

but we're a little freaked out by the politics of busting them. Genevieve, can you tell us

more about our pairing? Sure. Paul Fieg's gender reversed version of Ghostbusters has somehow

sparked more controversy than any film this summer.

Future cultural historians will surely wonder why people got this upset over a silly comedy

about four professional ghost wranglers setting up shop in New York City. And yet here we are,

stuck in an ugly fight over issues of nostalgia, misogyny, race, representation, and activism,

all over a movie that mostly wants to show us a good time.

So what is it about the original 1984 Ghostbusters that's inspired such strong feeling?

This week, we'll look at the two Ghostbusters side by side and see what all the fuss is about.

Has this become a disaster of biblical proportions?

Human sacrifice. Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria.
